The End of the League

Yesterday we held the last event for the Dark Ascension League. All land produced an extra mana this week, which the games much quicker. It was a format that really favoured the Devils allowing them to score an impressive 18 points!

The final standings for the individual players are:

Robert 67 points
Nathan 54 points
Gary 47 points
James 47 points
Richard 36 points
Adam 30 points
Nick 10 points
Darren 9 points
Roy 6 points
Olly 3 points

The race that ends this event as the dominant species on the plane of Innistrad is ..... SPIRITS, six points in front of werewolves. The finals scores for the tribes is as follows:

Spirits 63
Werewolves 57
Humans 56
Devils 42
Vampires 36
Zombies 30

Thanks to everyone that played in the fun format, it was great to see lots of different deck ideas and tribes being used each week. Keep checking the blog for the next event!

The rankings page will be updated on Saturday after this weeks FNM which is in Shoreham and is LEGACY! Hope to see you there!

Dark Ascension League

The league is drawing to a close, this week players only had 15 life so games did not last long! We had vampires, zombies, humans and werewolves trying to make a challenge at the top of the table.

The new standings are:

Spirits 63
Humans 56
Werewolves 45
Vampires 36
Zombies 30
Devils 24

Zombies had the best results with both Richard and Robert scoring very high!

Next week is the final week and as it is the full moon, all lands tap for an extra mana of any colour that the land can produce. This should mean that some of the bigger creatures of Innistrad could feature! We will then know which race dominates Innistrad and also which player will be the overall winner of the league!

Dark Ascension League

The second week of the Dark Ascension League has been played in Kids Dreams in Shoreham!

The week there were decks representing Humans, Werewolves, Spirits and Vampires!

The overall winner for the week was Nathan, winning against all of his opponents! Although the night belonged to the Spirits who gained 21 points the Humans who gained 20 points, still hold onto the plane of Innistrad on a total of 32 points over the two weeks!

Next week all creature spells will cost 1 colourless less, so this could really pile the pressure onto the surviving Humans!

Tribal Scores after 2 weeks:

Humans 32
Spirits 21
Devils 9
Vampires 3
Werewolves 3

Can the Humans remain on top for another week!

Ignite the Dawn

The third set of Innistrad block has been revealed as 'Avacyn Restored'.

This makes a change as recent final sets of magic blocks have resulted in the rise of evil, 'Eldrazi' in Zendikar and 'Phyrexia' in Scars of Mirrodin, unless Wizards has a twist in store for us.

Prerelease events will take place on the 28th-29th April (we'll keep you posted on where and when closer to the time) with the set going on sale on May 4th.

Happy Gaming

Innistrad League

Due to the lack of Innistrad boosters in November we have decided to finish the league and declare a winner. League play will return after the new release 'Dark Ascention' but hopefully the format will either change or stock availabilty will improve!

As far as the Innistrad league is concerned, the winner after the 4 rounds played is Theo! Well done for doing consistantly well each week! All players get a poster and a 'Curse of the Bloody Tome' for playing and the winner will receive a promo 'Cultivate'

Remember to check your rankings, as the FNM and League results have been added!

Combo Corner in a Darker Standard

I've been putting this article of for a little while. I love to find little ways of making mechanics work for me (and you) but wanted to see if you guys would think of the same things as me, but I can't wait any longer.

So, the number one card that jumped out at me when the set was spoiled (at least for exploiting)...
Yep, 'Parallel Lives', What an awesome card, with so many uses, for example....

Those are just a fraction of the cards that produce tokens in standard at the moment. Those of you that know me will already realise that I don't normally shrink my options to standard legal cards when I build decks but there are to many token generators to list (or picture). Also I want to show some stupid things that are do-able in this tiny amount of cards.

(Unfortunatly Gather may be needed to read some of the detail as Blogger have changed how you enlarge pictures)

My first idea is as follows...
I've purposely left the final result blank just to see what you guys think will happen.

Secondly, moving away from tokens I came up with this as an idea to get around the costly trigger of 'Ludevic's Test Subject'...
It's still a little clunky but it's potentially a quicker and more responsive way to transform him, rather than giving your opponent the time to remove him.

Thirdly, how to make the most of the 'Wooden Stake', if only you could make sure your opponent had Vampires...
Forth, how to help play your own spells whilst avoiding that pesky Werewolf trigger?...
Lastly but no means least-ly, do you want to cast 'Army of the Damned' for free? Yeah you do...
Well, I hope that's fueled your creative fires, hopefully the darkness will be forced to recede under your revitalised passion and I'll see you next time,

Innistandard II: Human League

For today's article, I'll be looking at Human related decks. There are currently three main categories of Human decks; G/W Tokens, G/W and Mono-White.

Here is a G/W Token list that recently made top 8 of Grand Prix Brisbane:

Razorverge Thicket x 4
Sunpetal Grove x 4
Gavony Township x 4
Forest x 8
Plains x 4

Avacyn's Pilgrim x 3
Birds of Paradise x 4
Blade Splicer x 4
Geist-Honored Monk x 2
Hero of Bladehold x 4
Mikaeus, the Lunarch x 2
Viridian Emissary x 2
Wurmcoil Engine x 1

Elspeth Tirel x 3
Garruk Relentless x 3
Mortarpod x 2
Oblivion Ring x 4
Overwhelm x 2

The deck looks pretty reliable as the mana is based around dual-lands and creatures such as Birds of Paradise to produce any colour required.
Outside of the mana producing creatures, Blade Splicer and Hero of Bladehold are the heavy hitters of the deck. The former gives a 3/3 artifact creature with first strike whilst the latter churns out soldier tokens upon every attack.
It is nice to see that Elspeth MK.II has seen some genuine constructed play. She may not be as good as her previous incarnation but now it appears that the tools she requires are entering the meta-game.

In terms of Innistrad's impact it is nice to see Mikaeus, the Lunarch see constructed play. Combined with Greens ability to mana ramp this cleric can enter the battlefield as a significant threat. Not just in his power and toughness levels but in his team pumping ability as well.
Geist-Honored Monk is another card that, in this build, can bring about an opponent's demise. On its own, its a 3/3 with vigilance for five mana that also produces two 1/1 flyers. The downside, with both of these cards, is that they are susceptible to removal but then, that's a fairly obvious statement to make.
Probably the greatest asset to the deck is Gavony Township. As a land, it provides an un-counterable pump to your team and can only really be stopped by Acidic Slime and Ghost Quarter (both being land destruction cards that are standard playable).
With regards to Garruk Relentless, it is interesting to see him being used in constructed builds. His main purpose in the tournament was to churn out 2/2 wolf tokens to keep applying pressure to control decks. This is all well and good but his better abilities are on his cursed side and this can be difficult enough to achieve let alone maintain.

Other G/W builds pretty much keep the same mana base but go for more offensive creatures such as Mirran Crusader, Champion of the Parish and Hamlet Captain. I've seen some builds that also include Mayor of Avabruck which seems like a reasonable choice as he pumps other humans. If he transforms, he is a 3/3 that produces 2/2 wolves (well, 3/3's from his wolf buffing ability).

For a purely White build here's what I've been thinking:

Contested Warzone x 3
Plains x 19

Champion of the Parish x 4
Doomed Traveller x 4
Mentor of the Meek x 4
Mirran Crusader x 3
Hero of Bladehold x 3
Mikaeus, the Lunarch x 2
Blade Splicer x 4
Geist-Honored Monk x 2
Spectral Rider x 3

Oblivion Ring x 3
Honor of the Pure x 4
Sword of War and Peace x 2

Creature featurally, the deck follows the same lines as the other builds because these guys are cheap and efficient. I included Doomed Traveller as he gives you extra value when his uppance comes. Mentor of the Meek gives the deck a bit of card advantage as you should hopefully be able to draw a few cards off of him for added value whilst Spectral Rider can hit home thanks to intimidate.
Honor of the Pure offers an essential pump to your guys for only two mana. The problem with it is it can prevent Mentors ability from being activated as the creatures will enter the battlefield with the increased power level.
I didn't include Elite Inquisitor because although he is a 2/2 for WW with first strike and vigilance, his protection attributes are a tad narrow unless your opponent happens to be playing a creature heavy deck based around 'Gothic monsters'.

I hope this has proved useful for any Human oriented players. Don't be afraid to leave any comments or queries. If you want any advice on a deck that you're working on or planning to build, let me know and I can mention it in a future article.

John, Mentor of the Meek.

Innistandard

The release of Innistrad has led to a transformation of the standard format. The recent rotation has seen Valakut, Splinter Twin, Zendikar Vampires and Boros (to name but a few) builds to fade in the aether.

The deck least effected by Innistrads release is Tempered Steel, although it did lose both Ornithopter and Steel Overseer. This deck has been dubbed the fastest in the format as it can quite easily kill people on turn three or four. A typical list centers around Blade Splicer, Memnites, Signal Pest and Vault Skirge to mount a quick offence then casting the namesake of the deck to deal lethal damage. Here is a sample list:

Plains x 18
Inkmoth Nexus x 4

Memnite x 4
Signal Pest x 4
Vault Skirge x 4
Blade Splicer x 3
Glint Hawk x 4
Porcelain Legionnaire x 4

Tempered Steel x 4
Dispatch x 4
Mox Opal x 2
Glint Hawk Idol x 3
Origin Spellbomb x 2

The biggest problem with this deck is that if you don't draw Tempered Steel things start to slow down. If your opponent is also packing a lot of removal then this can also ruin your day, especially if it effects both creature and artifact.

Perhaps the biggest change to the standard environment is the loss of Squadron Hawk. These little 1/1 flyers were the bane of many Magic players existence as they gave their owners a lot of card advantage. This was further re-enforced when they were equipped with one of the swords from the Scars of Mirrodin block.
The hawks departure has been quickly filled by two new dangerous creatures. The first of these is Invisible Stalker which has generated a lot of discussion. Two mana for a 1/1 creature that is both unblockable and untargetable by your opponent is pretty powerful. Equipping one of these invisible men with a sword should swing the game in your favour.

Geist of Saint Traft is a card that I'd been looking forward to playing with since it was previewed. The ghostly remains of Traft can deal out righteous retribution, attacking for six on turn four. With a sword equipped he becomes more potent as the additional toughness means he is less likely to be killed by blocking creatures.
Here's what I played at the Gambit Games Launch Party:

Seachrome Coast x 3
Glacial Fortress x 3
Ghost Quarter x 2
Plains x 8
Island x 8

Invisible Stalker x 3
Geist of Saint Traft x 2
Fiend Hunter x 2
Sun Titan x 1
Consecrated Sphinx x 2

Ponder x 4
Think Twice x 3
Mana Leak x 4
Timely Reinforcements x 2
Oblivion Ring x 3
Tumble Magnet x 2
Day of Judgement x 2
Gideon Jura x 2
Karn Liberated x 1
Sword of War and Peace x 1
Sword of Feast and Famine x 1
Sword of Body and Mind x 1

The deck performed reasonably well but with the absence of Jace Beleren and Preordain the deck has less options to dig than it used to. I'm not sure whether to keep Think Twice or switch to Divination. The former can be cast at instant speed so if you don't end up countering a spell you can draw a card instead and the flashback cost is quite reasonable. That said, you end up paying five mana to draw two cards.
Divination, meanwhile, offers two cards for three mana albeit at sorcery speed so if you prefer to play a tap-out control deck this may be a better option.

If I had to make any changes, I would probably remove Karn and replace him with Angelic Destiny as enchanting one of the hexproof creatures is a better play. Unfortunately, the aura doesn't interact with Sun Titan like the swords do but it is still returned to your hand when the enchanted creature dies.

That's it for now but I'll post some thoughts on standard decks soon. If there are any particular builds people want thoughts on then leave comments or talk to me at the club.
