Last Month at Gambit

Here is a brief summary of what happened last month, its a bit later than normal especially since this weekend is our monthly Gameday at Vale Park.

The big event for us in April was Salute which saw eight of the Gambit Team head to London to participate in this years exhibition, our game Draigo and the Draigonauts was very well received and it was a great day out for everyone that attended. Watch out for some of the great scenery that we purchased for the club on one of the tables soon!

At Kids Dreams the Dragon's Maze prerelease and Vanguard Comic Style Sneak Peak were scheduled for the same weekend and both events were well attended. Dragon's Maze started the weekend with our third midnight event, this time seeing 24 players stay up all night to play with the new cards a week before release!

This was followed by another event during the day on Saturday, which saw a very mixed field in both experience and ages playing...

In the evening the final Dragons Maze event of the day was the two headed giant - a really great fun event in which eight teams played in three rounds, some players having played for over 24 hours without sleep!

The Vanguard Sneak Peak ran along side this with eight players trying to win a promotional play mat. Vanguard has grown at lot and become one of the main card systems played at the club since its release last year!

On the Sunday Game Day the Dragon's Maze continued with two more events making 5 in total an impressive 76 different players and introducing a 10 new faced to the Gambit Games experience! Congratulations to Michael, Alex and Simon for winning the main events!

The Hero Clix guys ran a small event to introduce new players to the game and refresh players that had been away from the game for a while and we were joined by Martin and his team from Black Box with some demo copies of the new Lords of War Elves and Lizardmen.

40K as usual was played throughout the day with a full on apocolypse style battle featuring on one of the centre tables - the demise of a super heavy tank cutting the game short and wiping out half the board in a massive explosion! (One of the shortest battles of this scale I have every witnessed - and to think I thought they would not finish!) Bolt Action picked up new players in what is becoming a regular on the Gambit tables, along with War Machine and a good appearance again from board games such as Pandemic.

On the blog we had a busier month, so here is a list of some of the highlights that you may have missed...

With our next gaming Sunday approaching rapidly, watch out for an article later today with what to expect this month on the gaming tables at Gambit Games UK!

Khador and the Beast.

This article is re-posted from the site : http://garethhobby.blogspot.co.uk/

Hey..

So its been another busy month of hobby the highlight of which was the Salute event. I have been to many of GW's Games Days but this was my first Salute and it was awesome. Games Day is just a big Games Workshop advert, don't get me wrong I am a big GW fan but there isn't much there to get excited about. but Salute is like being inside nerdvana. If you are into gaming in general then this show really is awesome, there isn't much in the way of actual gaming, there are participation games but they are not a big part of the show. There are some big demo games going on that some clubs (normally of the historical variety) put on and these are normally very big. The main reason to go is the retail side, there are stands from the big retailers, games designers, sculptors, big companies, small companies basically anything that you can buy for any game is there and its a great opportunity to pick up those hard to find things. The club ran a 40K game this year and its defiantly something I would like to do again.

Lich Lord Terminus

Hobby wise I have managed to get a few things done in the last couple of weeks. First on the list is a new caster for my Cryx Warmachine Army. I actually bought this guy about a year ago and assembled him but then put him to one side to focus on learning one cast more in-depth, so after playing Deny as my main caster for a while I thought I would paint him up and give him a run out. Terminus is a big model and was a real pain to put together. I used my faithful Green Stuff and Superglue method, it's tricky but effective. it basically involves using a small amount of Green Stuff on one side of the joint before applying the Super Glue, the combination of the two makes joints rock solid, the trick is getting the joint to take as Green Stuff and Glue can be a bit slippery on initial contact but when that sucker takes it isn't going anywhere unless the model takes a dive from the table. Even if a joint does break in this fashion its easy to fix as the Green Stuff moulds around the joint making reattachment easy.

So following on with the Warmachine theme I finally got round to finishing the Khador starter box. The box comes with Scorcha a Devastator and a Juggernaut. I also started on the unit of Man-O-War Shock Troopers. The Shock Troopers will be going in my final 35pt list no matter what as the models are fantastic and one of the reasons I started a Khador army in the first place. I have a final 35 list and luckily managed to purchase all the models I needed in one go at Salute. Most of them are stuck together and I think will give them a run out soon even though they wont all be painted. I want to see how they roll, I am going for a fairly standard Winterguard deathstar list using Epic Irusk as my main caster. Troops will consist of a full unit of Winterguard with all the attachments standing behind the Man-O-War. The Winterguard will be able to shoot through the Man-O-War due to one of Irusks abilities, when anything gets close the Man-O-War smack them, they will be supported by the Devastator. This leaves me with 9 points..... This is a nice Juggernaut sized hole but I am still undecided if thats what I will put in. I have a few other units lying around that I could put in, I suspect I will go with the Juggernaut to start with. However if I drop Devastator, and make a couple of other tweaks I might be able to get my Conquest in...... mmm.

Man-O-War Shocktrooper

Khador starter set

And finally I added a Beast of Nurgle to my fledgling Nurgle Daemon army. This guy will walk along with a unit of Plaguebearers and Charge a unit first to take all the Snap Fire before the Plaguebearers charge in.

Beast of Nurgle

So next up work continues on the forces of Khador and adding units to the Nurgle Daemons which are not that far from completion, I just need to finalise the army list.

Until next time...

Gambit Games at Salute 2013

On Saturday 20th April, 8 of the Gambit Games members took the 40K game 'Draigo and the Draigonaughts' to Salute 2013 at the ExCel in London!

Draigo and his Draigonauts prepare for the mission!

The scenario that was based on the classic film Jason and the Argonauts saw a heroic force of Grey Knights take on an endlesss enemy of Necrons to try and claim the 'FLECE' (Fluctuation Line Elimination Cortex Engine) of the the emporer!

Several players had a go throughout the day and many of them managed to fight their way through the Necron force, deactivate the power source controlling the shield that protected the golden 'FLECE' and be within reach of claiming the prize!

The 'FLECE' represented as a Golden Sheep! - A truly unique item!

Unfortunately, one the shield was down the true enemy revealed itself - Chaos Daemons! As the shield dropped a massive physchic backlash caused each of the Grey Knights to take a strength 5 hit with only involnerable saves allowed!

Only two players on the day managed to fight their way through the hordes of Nurgle to reach the 'FLECE' and close the rip in the warp before it was too late!

It was a really great day which was thanks to Sam, Aaron, Colin and Aaron who ran the game for us and to everyone that played the scenario with such enthusiasm.

If you saw us on the day and would like to know more about where and when we meet or would like to join our facebook group then please contact us at Gambitgamuesuk@gmail.com

Draigo and the Draigonauts

Somewhere in the Imperium what started as a simple rumour has become something much more complex and in need of attention!!! The Council of the High Lords of Terra has gathered to discuss what action should be taken. Although they are uncertain of the exact origin of the information, the Emperor's spies and Planetary Governors have become concerned about the mysterious F.L.E.C.E (Fluctuation Line Elimination Cortex Engine). The FLECE is said to hold the power to dominate the universe, an ancient technology maybe for the days of Necrontyr, a race that aeon's ago reigned supreme over the Galaxy! Fearing such power falling in to alien hands the council authorise a mission to retreive the FLECE. Only a select few are informed of the plans and  Kaldor Draigo is ordered to command the mission personally!

Kaldor Draigo is the Supreme Grand Master of the Grey Knights and a warrior beyond reckoning and will follow the Emperors orders without question. Selecting just a few of his most trusted Grey Knights, Draigo and his ' Draigonauts' leave Saturn's moon Titan under great secrecy, with only Draigo himself knowing the destination and purpose of their mission. Not even the captain of the strike cruiser 'Ruler of the Black Skies' will be given the co-ordinates until they are clear of Segmentum Solar!

When the Draigonauts arrive at the planet which has been given the operational code name of 'Colchis' they detect a force shield on what would otherwise seem a 'dead world'. Unable to scan what is concealed by the shield and finding no other signs of civilisation or technology Draigo reveals the purpose of their mission and concludes that the FLECE must be located beneath the shielded area. The 'Ruler of the Black Skies' holds its orbit above the planet and the unit of terminators, a Librarian and a Dreadknight are order to met with Draigo in the launch bay.

Initial passes made by their Thunderhawk Gunship reveal the possible location of the power source of this mysterious shield. In the ruins of an ancient city the power source can only be approached on foot as it is protected by some form of psychic energy! Draigo orders the gunship to get them as close as possible, the pilot selects a suitable landing area but informs his Grand Master that is will be unsafe for the ship to remain in the area that close to an unknown physic force. As they make their final approach to the drop zone the pilot picks up movement on his sensors. Draigo considers making a second pass before disembarking but remembers his orders that the FLECE must not fall into alien hands!

As the dust clears caused by the Thunderhawks engines, Draigo surveys the area, in the distance he sees the shield but knows that without disabling the power source his men will not be able to locate the FLECE. The Dragonauts pick up multiple movement on their auto sensor and through the haze they see the luminous green  of Gauss weapons ....

What happens next is up to you! If you would like a chance to play out this mission then why not come and see us at 'Salute 2013' this weekend at the ExCel in London!

Jason and the Argonauts!

We had a brief meeting for those members of the club that are interested in being involved in taking a demonstration game to next years Salute! The theme is Jason and the Argonauts so we are proposing doing a 40K game themed on the skeleton battle featured at the end of the film! If you have not seen the film here is the relevant clip from the 1963 epic! (Obviously not the original soundtrack!)

The full film is also available on Youtube, see other video's after this one has played!

We are thinking of using Necrons for the skeletons and Grey Knights for the Argonauts!

Our project team currently has 6 members and will be lead by Gareth. If you would like to join the project team then please let Gareth now as soon as possible.

We have just received the date for next years Salute, it will be held on Saturday 20th April! As yet we are not sure if we will be simply attending the event as we did this year, or hosting a demonsrtation / participation game as we did in 2011.

Either way its a date for your dairy and if you think you might be interested in attending or helping out should we decide to do a game then let us know and book the time off!

Gambit on Tour

Last weekend saw several of the Gambit Team taking some time to visit two of the biggest gaming venues of the year. Whilst Dave and Nick tried their hand in the MTG Grand Prix in Manchester (more info about this soon hopefully from the guys) several other members of the club travelled to Salute 2012.

As you can see from the picture we were amongst the first to arrive having set off at about 6:30am. A massive thank you to the Station Cafe and Sam's dad for laying on the bacon rolls and coffee as this was a great way to start the day! Another big cup of coffee when we got there to ensure that we were all awake and ready for all that Salute could offer, although some were more awake than others!

Once inside the first point of call was Flames of War! (World War II gaming with 15mm miniatures)

The new Achtung! starter
set for Flames of War
For me it was an opportunity to meet with the guys from battlefront and discuss a range to put into Kids Dreams, as well as try out a new game! For everyone else it was a chance to blow things up with tanks!

Flames of Wars looks set to be a popular game and with the new box set Achtung! being launched it offers a really great way to start with the system! We played some basic games and all really enjoyed it, for me though the highlight was ..... the first casualty in the first game of Flames of War between Gambit players going to me, made so much sweeter as the casualty was one of Barry's tanks! Not to be childish ..... but 1-0!!!!

Then it was a case of where to start? There were so many gaming companies and miniatures available. Time to split up and go and see what could be found! One of the most impressive gaming boards was the Captain Scarlett game. The board was broken into three sections and as you progressed up the motorway the first section was removed, the other two rolled down and then the original added to the end allowing the game to progress!

The painting competition was as busy as ever with some truly great models on display. Definitely enough inspiration for us to make plans for our own painting event later in the year .... watch this space as Rob will be announcing this competition sometime soon!
Dystopian Wars was there of course with many of the new models on show. Some good demo games, which had been made more impressive by the scenery which had been built!

War Machine and 40K were also on display and Sam is the newest member to get started with War Machine, making one of the first purchases of the day! In the 40K universe there was a massive ork apocalypse game being played!

There were quite simply loads of historical games, being sold, played, demonstrated and may of the organisers, traders and visitors really got into character which makes the experience even more fun for the visitors!

Also present were many of the small game systems, Doctor Who which is always popular with me but also now some great figures from many other TV legends including Blake's 7!!! (a definite hit with some of the older children ... myself included!)
With so many demo games to choose from, here is a selection of some the the highlights ...

I thinks it fair to say that everyone had a great day and we certainly be back! For next year however we hope to return as demonstrators as we did in 2011. If anyone wants to be part of next years venture then let us know, also if you have any ideas for what we should demonstrate tell us soon!!! First thoughts are of a massive WWII tank battle, but who knows what we will end up with?

That's about it from Salute 2012, except what trip would be complete without one of us falling foul of the Galactic Empire .... and this years foolish culprit to utter the words 'arn't you a little short for a storm trooper?'

Rob, upsetting both sides of the
 galactic fight at once!

Salute 2011

Gambit Games are going to Salute 2011 tomorrow to demonstrate a new variant of our Warhammer 40K scenario: Valkyrie Down - this time its the Tyranids that pose the almost unstopable threat. We will post more information about Salute when we get back. For those who are planning on visiting Salute tomorrow here is the introduction to our game....

As the Valkyrie crashed down around him in the ruined city instead of carrying his skinny arse back to Base Primus, Lieutenant Rafe Kelton considered his changing fortunes. Half an hour ago, all he had thought about was the fame he would soon garner! The reason - clean shots from his Recon Lightning’s High Altitude Recorder of the kraken hive fleet massing on the planet on Ichar IV. His recorder was showing a massive tyranid organism when the data came back its information sent a chill down his spine … it was a TYRANID HIEROPHANT BIO TITAN! All of a sudden, Rafe was critical to the war effort! The stir when he reported back finding it was audible - even over the vox line to the commanders at the base. His orders were “get the detailed shots of the army composition back to base”. Even a Space Marine had joined his voice to the commands – the eye of the Emperor was firmly on him! A first – an order he actually wanted to follow… The Emperor had a fine sense of irony it seemed as five minutes later he was crawling from the wreckage of his Lightning deep in enemy territory - shot down by a lucky shot from a venom cannon. It seemed the pictures were the reason for the prompt arrival of the Valkyrie to recover him – along with a squad of stone faced killers to ensure his arrival in one piece and once more the Emperor’s gaze was elsewhere… A torrent of fire from a carnifex scouting brood tore the Valkyrie out of the sky and now Rafe knew it was all over. As he looked at the grim faces of the guardsmen around him, he knew his number was up. He could hear the the scuttling of many bio organisms fast approaching. Then as the noise from the approaching tryanids grew. The vox in the ruined Valkyrie sputtered into life.

Rafe gazed in awe at the fiery comets approaching his position, then sweat broke out as he realised the Angels of Death hadn’t mentioned recovering him too….
