The future of Friday Night Magic

What does this mean for FNM, well put quite simply the FNM you are used to is no more! Wizards of the Coast will not allow me to sanction events until such time (if ever) that I trade from another bricks and mortar retail store!

What does this mean?

You as a player will not get planeswalker points for playing at any future Gambit Games or Kids Dreams Events.

We will not be able to pre-release events.(although I am trying to find solutions to this problem)

We will no longer receive promotional material from Wizards of the Coast.

What is the Future for FNM?

So if that's what we have lost, what if anything will there be for the MTG community in Shoreham?

I am planning a regular MTG event which will happen on Friday's between 6pm and 10pm at the Royal George in Shoreham.

I am not sure if I am allowed to call the Event 'FNM', but if not then I am sure I will think of a new name! I could not get anything sorted out in time for tonight's event but hopefully everything should be in place for next week!

I will create an event on Facebook for each week in advance to let you know what formats are on offer.

As we are no longer tied to Wizards system we can run events in what ever format we like and may even look in team and multi player events!

As I have already said players will no longer get planeswalker points so instead there will be a new point system introduced much the same as the existing Gambit points that you may already be familiar with but with some slight modifications and new calculation method as we had previously relied on information provided by Wizards WER system. More details on this will follow soon.

We normal finalize the Gambit points at the end of November to send out invites to the end of year tournament, so I plan to do this based on the current scores as of last week! I will post sending out more information on this event soon!

Obviously I still have some old promotional cards, but these will run out. I will try and make the prizes for playing interesting and varied.

As for the venue itself it is very nice the facilities are excellent (proper comfortable chairs for everyone - no more stalls!) It is separate from the pub with its own entrance and should provide us with a great gaming and social environment.

I have booked the room for this coming Tuesday and will be creating an event for this later today! This will be a casual MTG evening much like the old 'Skirmish Tuesday' at the shop and will give me an opportunity to show you the new venue and review how much interest there will be for the new Friday events. I also hope to discuss with everyone that attends what will be on offer from Kids Dreams and Gambit in relation to the weekly events.

Tonight will will have a STANDARD event which willcost £2 as normal and starts at 6:15pm. In addition there will be a draft available for those that are interested which will be ...

A Ravnica Block draft, in other words one booster from each of the Return to Ravnica sets. This will cost £12 and will probably start at about 6:30pm. As normal I will need 8 players for this event to take place.

This Weeks FNM

Tonight's FNM is Legacy which will cost £2 to play and will start at 6:15pm. We will also run a Standard event if there is enough interest. I will need 8 players for each event. (If there are only enough players for one event that event will be legacy!)

This week there is again a lack of Theros boosters so we are selling M14 and Return to Ravnica.

The Hydra deck is released today and is on sale for £9.99, there are only a few of these left in stock (those who pre-ordered this product - yours are ready for collection!)

There will be a Hydra challenge this weekend at Gambit Sunday - details to be posed later!

Next week the commander decks are being released, we have a limited allocation of these and they are likely to sell out fast (several have already gone to pre-order) - if you want one and do not want to be disappointed - please order and pay for one soon!

The 15th sees the release of this years holiday gift box - last year these went very fast and will again be on a limited release. They will be the same price as last year - so again if you want one please order it soon!

Tonight the FNM event will be MODERN which will cost £2 and will start at 6:15pm. As we never got FNM cards for October we will be issuing the November ones from tonight for the first and second place players.

I will also run a STANDARD event if there is enough interest in both formats. As normal we need 8 players for each event.

Launch Party Weekend

This weekend's events will start with the release of Theros. The FNM will be the first chance for players to use their Theros cards in standard decks.

We will be running both a standard event which will cost £2 as normal and a Theros draft which will cost £12. Both events will start at 6:15pm and the top two players will both get a promo 'Experiment One'.

On Saturday from 11am, we will be running a second draft, same as before.
On Sunday at 'Gambit Sunday' from midday, we will be running a sealed deck event (6 normal Theros boosters) for £20.

As it is the launch weekend everyone that takes part in any of these events will receive a foil, promotional, alternate art Bident of Thassa.

There will be a poster at the back of the shop which is a visual puzzle, that any who solve will receive a gift from the gods.

Tonight is  the last FNM before the rotation and of course the lead up event to the midnight prerelease!

For tonight's event we will be running two formats, firstly a Ravnica and Gatecrash draft (2 RTR and 1 GC). For this event we can have a maximum of 16 players and it will cost £12 as normal!

In addition we will be running a standard event which is your last chance to use cards from the Innistrad block and M13. This will be £2.

Our singles (commons and uncommons) for the sets that are rotating out have been reduce to just 5p

Both events will start at about 6:15pm and we will of course need a minimum of 8 players for each.

This Weeks FNM

Tomorrow is Friday which can only mean one thing ... FNM! This week we will be running a M14 draft for a maximum of 12 players, which will cost £12 as normal.

For those of you who prefer constructed decks then why not have a go at the deck building challenge ....

This one is as easy as 1,2,3.... It will be a STANDARD deck of 60 cards or more with the follow extra rule!

There can only be 4 cards for each mana cost and no cards with X in there mana cost! This means only 4 cards for each converted mana cost so you could have 4 one drops, 4 two drops, 4 three drops and so on but no more!

Side boards are allowed but player must can not exceed the 4 cards for each cost for any game that they play so you could swap out 4 one drops for 4 different one drops but you could not add addition 1 drops if you deck already contained the maximum of 4. The cards for each CMC do not have to be the same card!

Cards with flashback and miracle cards are fine with the CMC being the normal casting cost not the miracle or the flashback! Split cards are tricky as they are technically all three depending on when and how you cast them! However for this challenge I have decided that they are the combined cost so in the case of Wear and Tear it would be a 3 drop! (My think is that this is the cost at which the spell causes the most impact and will give players a little bit of flexibility!)

If you want a chance to play 'normal' standard this weekend then I am planning a small 3 round event for this Saturday afternoon - I will post more details tomorrow on the Kids Dreams Blog!

Tonight's FNM

This week is the first FNM of August and as such it is of course STANDARD. It also means that we have a new FNM card which is will be ....

The art for this card is pretty cool and remember the first two players will get this card along with two other players chosen by the organiser! We aim to start as close to 6:15pm as possible although players can join in later rounds if they want to.

Just a quick note on being late for a round - a number of times in the last few weeks players have been late for a round as they have popped out for food this can cause delays to the event so as a reminder ....

"players have 5 minutes to get to there table to start their match, if they fail to do so then their opponent will get an automatic 2-0 victory!"

If you are going out of the building please let me know so I can check how long is left on the round! Remember that when all matches are finished the next round can be started so if I don't know your not there the round may be started without you!

This weeks FNM

This week the FNM event will be a M14 draft! After havinf to cancel the prerelease draft this is the first one we have organised for this set! It will cost £12 and starts at about 6:15pm. As per normal I will need a minimum of 8 players but this time I could go as high as 16 players!

If you prefer a 'contructed' challenge then why not have a go at this month's...

As a lot of players have asked for us to do 'Pauper' again and the EXTENDED format will not be around for much longer (for FNM at any rate!) I have decided to combine then and do 'PAUPER EXTENED'

Constructed decks must contain a minimum of sixty cards. There is no maximum deck size; however, you must be able to shuffle your deck with no assistance. If a player wishes to use a sideboard, it may contain up to fifteen cards.

With the exception of basic land cards, a player’s combined deck and sideboard may not contain more than four of any individual card, counted by its English card title equivalent. 

The following card sets are permitted in Extended tournaments:
Zendikar (until September 27, 2013)
Worldwake (until September 27, 2013)
Rise of the Eldrazi (until September 27, 2013)
Magic 2011 (until September 27, 2013)
Scars of Mirrodin

The only common cards which are banned in Extended tournaments are Ponder and Preordain (until September 27, 2013)

All cards used must have been printed at the common rarity. Common promo cards are only legal if the card has been printed at the common rarity in a set or product. However for this format if a card has been reprinted, it will only be allowed based on its latest printed version - therefore Doom Blade is uncommon and will not be allowed.

This event will also start at 6:15pm and will cost £2

Tonight's FNM

Tonight it is the launch event for 2014, so in a change to what was originally planed tonights event will be STANDARD. We will try and start as promptly as possible at 6:15pm and it will cost £2 as normal!

Everyone that attends tonight will get a special promo card just for playing which is ....

We have boosters, intros, fat packs and deck building tool kits all in stock today so please let me know if you need anything, particularily the fat packs and tool kits as last year these sold out fast!

This is the last FNM before the new core set is released and becomes legal to play! Its also the last event before the prereleases start!!!

Tonight it is STANDARD which will cost £2 as normal and will start at 6:15pm. Tonight we will be doing 4 rounds and a top 4 play off for the eventual winner.

There will be no boosters for tonight prize, instead we will be giving the winner an Ultra Pro Playmat!! The winner will have a choice of either ...

It's Friday and it's June which means .... Andy Murray in a 'Wimbledon' Semi Final ... well yes, but more importantly Friday Night Magic with a new promo card....

Tonight we are potentially giving away 8 of them! As it is the first event of the month we are running a standard event as normal with an entry of £2 per player!

In addition as there are a number of players at the moment not playing standard we are offering a draft as well! It will cost £12 per player as normal and will be a RTR block event, so 1 Return to Ravnica, 1 Gatecrash and 1 Dragon's Maze! Its likely to be the last one in this block for a while as the one on the 19th will be the launch event for M14! As normal I need 8 players for this event as a minimum and 12 will be the maximium!

Both events will start at about 6:15pm as normal! Please let me know what you want to play - remember the draft will be a limited amount of space!

I will be running a second event tonight which will be STANDARD which again will be £2 entry! As per normal I need at least 8 players for each of these formats. I would appreciate it if you could let me know if your coming and what format you wish to play!  To avoid disappointment I would recommend bring two decks, however remember that all standard decks are modern legal!

This Week's FNM

This Friday we will be holding a RAVNICA BLOCK Draft (1 Return to Ravnica Booster, 1 Gatecrash booster and 1 Dragons Maze Booster), the event will be starting at 6:15pm and will be open to up to 24 players and will cost £12 to play. As normal we will need at least 8 players for this to enable it to be a sanctioned FNM event!

In addition to this event we will also be running a ....

Deck building challenges are basically constructed deck events such as Standard or Modern with extra conditions added to make them a bit of a challenge and encourage player to use cards that they don't always play with.

This week's challenge will be a Standard deck with the additional condition that you can only use common cards and up to 5 uncommon cards (inclusive of sideboard, meaning that if you main deck has 5 uncommon then your sideboard can not have any uncommons) This is format know as peasant but we have restricted it further by making it standard!

This event will still be an FNM event and you will get points as normal as well as the usual prize cards, etc. The event will cost £2 as normal!
