The Plan for May's Club Day

Hi all,

I hope this finds you all well. The weekend of gaming is once more upon us. So with out any further a do, the plan...

It's gonna be a big one this month, '2 for Glory' 40k doubles tournament! (Rules here, Tickets here)
There are quite a few teams involved in this one, it should be a good tournament.

There will also as ever be a table aside for Warhammer Fantasy players, also the sea boards will be up for grabs if your a 'Dystopian' fleet admiral.

The card tables are back to normal after last months MTG prerelease. This means, all MTG formats, Pokemon, Redakai and for the first month, we'll have some 'Cardfight!! Vanguard' Demo decks available if you fancy giving that a go. I'll also be demoing Redakai again, if anyone wants to try that. Also with the imminent release of Planechase 2012, I'll be demoing the old Planechase set.

At 7.00pm we are intending to run 'The Avacyn Restored, Game Day' Tournament. This will be Standard format and these are up for grabs...

Attendance

Top 8

As per usual the stack of club board games will be available, as well as 'The Settlers of Catan' and 'Wings of War', so why not try some of them.

It's set to be a good one, so we hope to see you all there.

Token the Biscuit

Last Friday marked the end of an era in Gambit history. It bore witness to the last FNM to be held at Kid's Dreams mother-ship store in Hove.
The back draft seemed to be going well enough but Olly and I sat down and had a few friendly standard testing matches.

I've recently switched from Grixis Control to an Esper Control build.
As much as I enjoyed playing Grixis I found that it was too slow against the more aggressive decks in the meta at the moment. Plus, I'm a White-Blue player at heart but can't bring myself to play Delver.

I'd started building this deck before 'Hallelujah' won Pro Tour Avacyn Restored after opening two copies of Tamiyo, the Moon Sage in my fat pack, courtesy of Kid's Dreams.

The deck encompasses control elements with carefully constructed luck. If such a thing exists.
For this reason, and in-keeping with Gambit's Motto, I present: Token the Biscuit.

Here's the list:

Main Deck

Tamiyo, the Moon Sage x 2
Gideon Jura x 2
Sorin, Lord of Innistrad x 1

Mana Leak  x 3
Doom Blade x 2
Thought Scour x 4
Think Twice x 4
Entreat the Angels x 2
Day of Judgement x 2
Terminus x 2
Lingering Souls x4
Timely Reinforcements x 3
Oblivion Ring x 3

Glacial Fortress x 3
Seachrome Coast x 3
Darkslick Shores x 2
Drowned Catacomb x 3
Isolated Chapel x 1
Island x 6
Plains x 8
Swamp x 2

Sideboard

Under Construction

The deck performed reasonably well; apart from the final game where I acted like an obsessive rural artist and kept on drawing lands.

In one game I managed to ultimate Tamiyo after stabilising on seven life for what seemed like an eternity.
Having sent my Moonwalker ultimate I then drew an Entreat the Angels tapping out for five 4/4 Angelic Guardians. After resolving, Entreat promptly returned to my hand ready to be cast again next turn.

So, let's break this deck down. Firstly the Walkers.

Tamiyo and Gideon have great synergy in fact I must just blend the names as they work so well together.

Gideon protects you and Tamiyo by diverting attackers whilst she can keep a big threat tapped down hopefully allowing Mr. Jura to survive a little longer.

Then there is the interaction between tapping and drawing and tapping and destroying. The Moon Sage can tap down a threat then Gideon can destroy it with his - 2 ability. Put simply Tamiyo taps, Gideon guts.

Gideon's +2 forces creatures to attack. Tamiyo's -2 allows you draw answers.

It's a very rare case but both walkers have ultimates than can bring a game to an end pretty quickly.
Once control has been established, Gideon can swing for six whilst Tamiyo's is just bonkers. Unlimited counter-spells and removal. Or, in my case, unlimited angel generation.

Sorin, Lord of Innistrad was thrown in as a space filler. Nothing personal but the conclusion was that it provides a stalling token whilst building up towards a powerful ultimate.
His Emblem can also be useful if your side of the table is covered with Angel tokens making them attack for a quarter of the starting life total.

Plans have been formed in my mind to swap Sorin for Venser as his ultimate combos particularly well with Tamiyos.

The downside is that Gideyo/Tameon costs five mana which isn't great. However, I didn't find this a big problem when running 26 lands. Being able to play a land every turn is important, especially so for control decks, where the last thing you want is to be selling your soul for that 4th bit of cardboard that says land on it.

This brings me on promptly to the rest of the deck. Thought Scour and Think Twice as card advantage mechanisms.

Both act as instant speed card drawing but the problem arises in when to play them. This is due to the miracles present in the deck. You have to try and calculate when you could draw a miracle and accommodate for the amount of mana you'll have available to do it.

Thought Scour serves an alternate win condition if Tamiyo can go ultimate. You can target yourself to essentially draw four cards and find an answer or you can target your opponent to painfully mill them two cards at a time.

I've mentioned Think Twice before (so I suppose I am thinking about it twice now). Paying five mana to draw two cards isn't great but it's the ability to chose when to play it that makes it stand out.

If I were to alter anything I would try swapping Thought Scour for Ponder. An ability to manipulate the library of miracles could prove more beneficial than drawing a random card.

The rest of the deck is built around simple stalling schemes.

Mana leak, Oblivion Ring, Day of Judgement and puny blockers provided by Lingering Souls and Timely Reinforcements need no discussion. They are traditional control cards that are employed to annoy and stall your opponent.

I am loath to close but if there are any suggestions or opinions about this deck then feel free to comment. Reactions to said contributions may vary and are subject to availability. Terms and conditions apply.

Seriously though, regards and Happy Gaming,

JoTG

Aprils Club Day Round Up and Avacyn Restored in Hove

Once more we find ourselves at the end of the month club day. This time as promised we were also running the Avacyn Restored Prerelease. This was the view after set-up...

But it quickly turned into this....

We had a massive Warhammer Fantasy Battle Magic game on the go at the top of the hall, featuring club veterans Swifty and Kevin.

At the same time, the Red Dust Planet was being fought over by a Space Marine Force and Chaos in a 'Dawn of War' 'Capture and Control' game.

We also had a large contingent of 'Young Guns' fighting over a battle wrecked outpost.

In the rumble of a lone church on the eastern fringes of the imperium we find Scott's Eldar led by Eldrich taking on Pete's brand new Tau force.

Eldrich is taking on a
whole squad of Kroot!
Apparently he kills 3 and
the rest run of the board!

On the next table we find Mike and Colin preparing for the coming 40k Doubles against a..... army in a time warped medieval village.

Aaron found himself in the catering core this month giving Zoe back up.

After Eldrich had dispatched the greater good they then formed an uneasy alliance to take on a singular yet twice as strong 'Young Gun'. Giving onlookers a possible hint as to plans for the previously mentioned 40k doubles and Rob and Micheal took on Battle Tech once more. (pictures unfortunatly missing)

War Machine kept the battle raging on the village board.

That is unfortunately all I can show you of the day as I spent the rest of my time engrossed in the prerelease tournament, sorry. It was a very good tournament though. Gary has previously mentioned a little of what happened. We had a large amount of players new to our prerelease's and indeed new to the game in general. A few of the regular faces were unable to attend which was a shame, but we shall see them again. So without further a do, tournament details....

As per usual each prerelease is different, some people thought it would be a slow event but actually the amount of little creatures and the new 'Soulbond' mechanic meant that games were on the whole a lot quicker, at times a little to quick. I had a couple of games in which I didn't get enough land and by the time I was able to get back in the game it was all over.

The tournament was slightly over shadowed, literally rather than figuratively by this thing
...

The cardboard monolith stood ominously over the battlefield, players watching and waiting in anticipation. It would only open when players performed enough challenges during the day.

After the forth round what would be the final check of achievement cards showed that enough challenges had been completed. The momentous task of breaking the final seal fell upon Ryan.

'The young Cathar approached the colossal shard of silver. His heart was still yet his soul was restless, for he knew that inside lay both the planes salvation and its destruction. He steeled himself, knowing that every battle he had fought that morning had led to this moment.'

'The final seal had been broken. Both hope, and despair, had been unbound.'

'The Helvault opened and there was much rejoicing.'

Inside were double sided tokens one side showing a 4/4 Angel with flying the other, depicting a 5/5 flying Demon. The Helvault also contained 20 sided die and a 'Commander' sized army of Grislebrand, Avacyn and her angelic lieutenants.

After all that excitement players were then focused once more on the task of victory and for the final two rounds the table chopped and changed, overall victory could have quite easily been in one of six different players grasps, but this is the final standings.....

1. Nathan
2. Craig
3. Tom
4. Dom
5. John
6. Andrew
7. Robert
8. Olly
9. Chris Sisley
10. David
11. James
12. Nick
13. Chris Sherrin
14. Darren
15. Gary
16. Becky
17. Richard
18. Gareth
19. Richard Cooley
20. Will
21. Matt
22. Joshua Sisley
23. Ryan
24. Martin
25. Charlie
26. Josh Mongomery
27. Rakesh
28. Katie

Congratulations are in order for Nathan, but all players as well, as everyone played exceptionally well and fairly through out the day.

This was not the last of the day however, a break for dinner, then a Magic draft. The battles in the rest of the hall fell quiet, tables were being collapsed although the draft continued till late the club as a whole was done.

I hope this fills in most of what happened this club day, I'm sure we've missed something so if you want to add anything; info/ bragging/ photos, stick it in the comments or the facebook and we'll see you next time.

Roaming reporters John and Olly :D

P.s join the mailing list, you have been told!

FNM and Avacyn Restored Launch Party

Wizards have changed the idea of Launch Party! The event itself has been phased out and instead players will get the opportunity to get the promo card at the Friday Night Magic Events!

This has also meant that the official launch day is Friday and cards are on sale from today! It also means that as tonight's FNM is a STANDARD event, you can play with you new cards straight away as the set is legal as of today!

We are in Hove tonight, from 6:30pm onwards and it will cost £2 to attend as normal! Remember the top two will still receive the FNM promo card which is

Avacyn Restored Pre-Release Update!

I will be posting some more details about the Two Headed Giant, Main Prerelease and Draft events soon, but I thought I would put up a quick message to say that two rain coats were found in the hall this morning, please let us know if the belong to you!!

Secondly and most importantly a really big that you to everyone that played in one of the prerelease events! We had a total of 66 entrants which was 40 unique players, the best turn out we have had for a MTG event! It was great to see the regulars as well as meeting a total of 10 new players! If it was you first event or if you are a veteran MTG player thanks for making it such a pleasure to organise and I hope you all equally enjoyed the experience!

After starting at 6pm on Friday and eventually finishing a 11pm on Sunday I was tired to say the least and for Richard, Nathan and Tom it must have been even more exhausting as they played all 4 events! (A total of 39 hours of MTG!!!!!)

So to sum up THANK YOU and hopefully see you at the next one!

Avacyn Prerelease Shoreham

The Avacyn Restored Prerelease has started in Shoreham! We have a total of 14 players of which 7 are new to the game! Players have sorted through their cards and hopefully built the superior deck of the day and claim the honour of being a prerelease champion! There is an Avacyn and a Griselbrand, let see if he gets cast first and make the biggest impact on the day!

Round One!

Sam becomes the first player to cast a MIRACLE, casting Bonfire of the Damned causing 7 damage to creatures and player!

Tom W.  tries to play with an opening had of just blue lands, and has no luck and fails to draw the plains he needs to cast his creatures, resulting in a quick win to Tom K.

James casts the first Terminus of the day!

Rachel plays the first Legendary Creature and is high fived by nearly all the other players!

At the end of the round 7 seals on the Helvault are broken!

The 7 players all scoring 3 points and therefore joint at the top of the table are: Nathan, Tom K., Simon, Rachel, Sam, Richard and Hibby!

Round Two!

Sam seems to be the man of miracles! He casts Temperol Mastery and gains another turn!

Roy becomes the first winner in the second round and both he and his opponent Luke get to break seals on the Helvault!

Hibby using a life gain deck against a mainly blue control deck seems to be caught in an endless battle! The game eventually finishes becoming the longest game of the morning so far and is immediately followed by the quickest game of the morning 2 minutes and Sam levels it at 1-1! Another quick game and same wins 2-1!

Richard seems to have better luck today than in previous events (no lack of mana so far!) and beats last nights FNM winner Tom K. 2-0!

Dylan is keen to cast Tibalt the only planeswalker open this morning but so far no luck, he checks his deck when his game ends only to find that he had been on the bottom the whole time!

During this round 4 seal were broken and only 6 remain!

The top five after 2 rounds are : 1. Richard, 2. Nathan, 3. Simon, 4. Sam and 5 Tom K.

Round Three!

At last Tibalt enters the battlefield! Dylan manages to draw for several turns with his +1 ability but Tom K. deals lethal damage with Wolfir Silverheart just before Tibalt and use his -6!

Simon casts Sigarda again, a card that seems to be doing well for him! Only for the man of miracles to do it again and cast Bonfire of the damned from of the top of his deck!

James uses Silverblade Paladin to swing for 10 damage on keep him in the game! He gets his first win of the day and then opens a seal on the helvault!

Rachel manages to cast Avacyn but unfortunately does not get you use her as the game ends next turn!

During this round 5 seals are broken leaving just 1 keeping Avacyn entrapped in the Helvault!

The top 5 after 3 rounds are: 1. Nathan, 2. Simon, 3. Richard, 4. Sam and 5. Tom K.

Round 4!

Players are all refreshed after a 30min lunch break and keen to play the next round, especially with one one seal remaining. Everyone is keen to see what is in the Helvault!

Nathan and Simon are on the top table, but there are 8 players in with a chance to be in the top 2 at the end of the round! So still everything to play for!

A few minutes in to round and Louis gets his 5 achievements and earns the right to break the last seal! At last Avacyn is free! And what is in the Helvault I hear you ask, well .................................. that would spoil it for tomorrow!

Sam cant get get the miracle he needs, and loses to Richard 2-0 in a quick 15 minutes!

Simon wins his 4 round in a row and will definitely be the man to beat going into the last couple of rounds!

Dylan suffers the loss of Tibalt for the first time, but Louis (the breaker of the Helvault) can not do enough damage before the time runs out and the last game of the round finishes on a draw!

After the round finishes the top 5 are: 1. Simon, 2. Nathan, 3. Richard, 4. Tom K.and 5. Tom W. (Places 2-5 are all drawn on 9 points!)

Round 5!

Simon who is currently our leader equips a Moonsilver Spear and uses to great effect in his game against Tom, seems appropriate as this is today's promo card!

Richard faces Roy (both having a good day so far!). Richards chooses to stick with an opening hand of 2 forrests, 3 plains, Voice of the Provinces and Sigarda ... a risk maybe but it pays off and he wins 2-0!

In his first game against Tom W., Nathan has what he describes as the best finish he has ever had!!!
He played a Zealous Conscripts gaining control of a Restoration Angel which had already been Defanged, he then played Cloudshift targeting the angel, when that re-entered without the defang (staying Nathans for the rest of the game, even though that was not that long), he targeted the conscipts which then flickered and Nathan targeted the Goldnight Redememer! Nathan swung with everything and won the game!
Toms comment on this ...... 'It made me weep!'

Avacyn is played by Rachel against Hibby and she quickly gets a win! 2-0

Despite a devastating 5th turn win, where Tom hit with a 8/8 Champion of Lambholt! Simon manages to come back for a 2-1 victory! With one round left can he be beaten?

Round 6 !

Richard is the only player left with a chance of beating Simon and they are drawn against each other in the final round!

Doubles partners for tonight Bourne and Gawn play each other in the final round, no mercy is shown by James winning 2-0 after all 10 minutes!

Second game to finish is Lisa vs Louis, with Lisa winning 2-0; followed closely by Simon and Richard's result!

Hibby can't fend of the all the flying creatures under Tom W.'s control and loses 2-0!

Tom K.'s chance of being in the top two comes to an end losing 2-1 to Nathan!

And the final game to finish the event is Dylan vs Louis which finishes 2-0 to Luke!

THE FINAL RESULT!

14. Louis
13. Dylan
12. James
11. Hibby
10. Roy
9. Lisa
8. Luke
7. Sam
6. Tom K.
5. Tom W.
4. Rachel
3. Richard
2. Nathan

and the winner ..... SIMON!

An excellent performance from Simon, unbeaten all day!!

Get on the agenda is tonight's two headed giant prerelease, a first for Gambit and hopefully something that we will do again! I will let you know how it went on the next blog!

Aprils Club Day Plan

This Month's plan is slightly more open ended due to one big thing 'Avacyn Restored'. This is the next big release in the Magic the Gathering calender and it's promising to be a go one. It will be a large tournament that will definitely take up the card tables so if you are looking for Pokemon, Redakai or Cardfight! Vangaurd, this may not be the best month, although we can probably fit you in somewhere.

Although MTG is going to be taking over the card side of the hall there will still be plenty of room for miniatures and board games (we'll make sure of it). As I previously said we haven't got anything set in concrete for these sides of the club, however a brief trawl of our Facebook group has revealed a couple of nice plans from regulars and new comers alike.

Firstly, there are a couple of players looking for big Warhammer Fantasy Games, so if you have a fantasy army this could be a good time to bring that particular case.

Secondly, regular gamer Paul Moss, has said that he will be bringing along a mass collection of multi-player games of fun, which could be a bit of a laugh. Also the awesome collection of club board games will be present and available to everyone. Paul has also said he's broken the champagne on his F.S.A fleet (Dystopian Wars), so they're leaving harbour for battle if anyone fancy's a game of that.

Another brief mention, Warhammer 40,000 players may wish to use this day to bone-up on there skills, just a hint, not saying anymore. Watch this space.

Demo's are on hold this month as we're running the tournament in it's place, but we do have some nice ones planned for the coming months. Having said that as soon as I finish the tournament I'm gonna be looking to play some different bits and bobs, so if anyone is looking for a game of Zombies/ Catan/ Uno/ Redakai... I'll be more than happy to teach you.

We're splitting up who is going to be reporting this month, so anyone with any interesting stories or brag-able moments, (Sam's fluke grenade onto Aaron's leader) should seek out a member of the team who'll make a note of it. I will try and endeavour to make the rounds and take pictures of as much as I am able.

Before I leave you a quick note from the staff at Kids Dreams, Tickets for the Avacyn Prerelease are still on sale, there will also be a 'draft' afterwards, this will cost £7.50 for those that want to play and will consist of the all important new Avacyn Restored cards.

Once more I've been Olly and this has been your update.

Pre-Release Press Release

Darkness will recede on the Plane of Innistrad this weekend with Avacyn Restored pre-releases being held at both Kid's Dreams stores.
Now that the whole Visual Spoiler has been posted, I asked four Magic players a few questions about their thoughts on this heavenly new set.

First into the fray was our furry friend Nathan:

Q. What are you most looking forward to in this set?
A. "Opening the Helvault and seeing what's inside."

Q. What's your favourite card from Avacyn Restored?
A. "Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded. It's Red and has awesome artwork."

Q. What would you like to open at the pre-release?
A. "The Helvault."

Q. What deck do you currently play in Standard?
A. Nathan just shrugged at this point as he uses a variety of differing decks but I think I'd be safe in saying that we known Nathan for his mono-red decks.

Q. What card do you think will impact Standard the most?
A. "Cavern of Souls."

Nick then gave me his thoughts on the new set:

Q. What are you most looking forward to in this set?
A. "All of the 'flicker' cards because I love flickering."

Q. What's your favourite card from Avacyn Restored?
A. "Cloudshift."

Q. What would you most like to open at the pre-release?
A. "Temporal Mastery. Drawing that and using it in the pre-release would be so fun."

Q. What deck do you currently play in Standard?
A. "A self-built flicker deck."

Q. What card do you think will impact Standard the most?
A. "Vexing Devil because it's just nasty."

I then asked our current champion Dave for his view:

Q. What are you most looking forward to in this set?
A. "I haven't been able to look at the set in detail but I like Tamiyo, the Moon Sage because her ultimate is powerful. I want 6 of them!"

Q. Favourite Card?
A. "Temporal Mastery."

Q. What would you most like to open at the pre-release?
A. "The same as the last one. I opened 3 mythics that worked really well together. Temporal Mastery would be good as well."

Q. What deck do you play in Standard?
A. "Black/White Tokens."

Q. What card do you think will impact Standard the most?"
A. "The new lands."

Finally our bearded artist Olly got his turn to paint a picture of his musings:

Q. What are you most looking forward to in this set?
A. "The Golden Mythic Angel set. I like multi-coloured mythics, Soulbond..... Miracle..."

Q. What would you most like to open at the pre-release?
A. "Soul of the Harvest, Oo or Vexing Devil"

Q. What do you currently play in Standard?
A. "Tempered Heartless Artifacts White Summoning Thing."

Q. What card do you think will have the biggest impact on Standard?
A. "Either Cavern of Souls, Somberwald Sage or Vexing Devil. I suppose Riders of Gavony could be good too."

That was all I had time for but please feel free to use your freedom of expression in the comments section.

All the best and see you on Sunday.

John, Voice of the Provinces

Avacyn Art

Just thought I'd stick a post up about the art work we're using to support our push towards 'Avacyn Restored's release:
These are the posters that are going up in Kids Dreams Hove and Shoreham....

Also, the button on the side of the blog...

Sorry, I haven't made this work, try
the one at the side of the page >

And finally your tickets... I don't need to show you them, as you can look at your own :D

Anyway, all of the above were created by our friendly neighbourhood Graphic Designer/ Illustrator, find more of his work here.

That all said, stay tuned for more updates on the contents of Avacyn Restored and I'll see you all at the tournament.

Olly for Gambit Games

New Avacyn Restored Planeswalkers!!!

So those of you that know me and play MTG will know that I have a bit of preference to Dragons, Angels and Planeswalkers!!!

Well the new set is looking good for two out of three!!! Since there are likely to be more angels to be spoiled I thought I would have a quick look at the two new planeswalkers.

First up we have Tamiyo, the Moon Sage

Put simply, in my opinion she looks great, all three abilities are very strong, with the -8 being potetially devastating!

And then theres Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded a two mana planeswalker!!!!

This guy only has two loyalty counters so could be removed quite simply, but his abilities look quite interesting, and if you can get him to 6 he could do serious damage! His +1 is a bit unpredictable but with lots of flashback cards could still give card advantage!

Let us know what you think of these guys!!!

Avacyn Restored Prerelease Events

Here are the details of the Avacyn Restored Prerelease Weekend!

The main event will be on Sunday 29th April and is at St Leonards Church Hall in Glebe Villas and it will start at 10am. As normal it is a sealed event costing £20 (This means that you will be given six boosters from the new Avacyn Restored block from which to build a 40 card deck to use for the tournament). You will also receive at the end of the event a foil promo card and another booster just for being there!

We will also have a special Helvault at the Sunday event only!!! Details of what is contained within are not known at the moment!

When players at the special Helvault Events get achievements, they'll each physically break a seal on the clubs own Helvault. Once all the seals have been broken, the club will open their Helvault and all the players will share the spoils within!

There will also be a prerelease event held on the Saturday at Kids Dreams in Shoreham. Details are the same except there will be no Helvault and numbers are restricted so you need to order your tickets soon!

Tickets have been on sale in Kids Dreams for about a week now, and today they have been added to the website, so you can order online. Remember to specify which event you want to attend!

There will also be a draft event on the Sunday costing £7.50 which will start at 7:00pm and a two headed giant event on the Saturday in Shoreham starting at 6pm. The cost for this is £12 per player for which teams will get 8 boosters to build two 40 card decks and play in teams of two! (If you are interested in this event then let me know soon)
Tickets for these events are available in stores and will be added to the site this weekend!

Remember that all of these events will be ranked so the more you play in the more points you will get (and more cards of course).

Avacyn Restored Previews

Wizards have unveiled a few cards from Avacyn Restored at the PAX East panel.

First up is Silverblade Paladin, a Human Knight with the new mechanic Soulbond:

White is set to be the colour with the most emphasis in this set as its all about the Humans fighting back against the forces of the night. With Avacyn's return, angels are instilled with new valour and will feature heavily:

Of course Demons are still present on Innistrad:

Demonlord of Ashmouth also reveals that the Undying mechanic from Dark Ascension will appear in the set.

Another new mechanic previewed is Miracle.

That's all for now but stay tuned to the daily mtg site as 'official' previews begin tomorrow.

The biggest preview of the day however; was this:

After months of speculation it appears that Ravnica will be the large block release for October when Scars of Mirrodin rotates out of Standard.
